How I Quickly Identify Good Resumes?

I’ve sifted through thousands of resumes, and I can tell you it’s probably my least favorite part of the hiring process.

I find it frustrating because I know I’ll have to waste my valuable time looking through a bunch of applications that don’t qualify for the role. Time is valuable and with so many resumes that all look the same, they are boring to look at and read through.

So, just like most hiring managers I skim to the most important parts. I look at where they are located, Their last few titles, how long they were there and then decide if I want to read any of the bullet points.

Can you relate?

Here’s a few suggestions to make this process a little less painful.

First, I never look at resumes in bulk when I’m super busy anymore. This is a guaranteed way to miss very valuable points on a resume.

Instead, pick a time of day to dedicate looking through resumes when you know you will be able to focus without distractions.

Second, before you start sifting through resumes, write down your non-negotiables. This means, if they don’t have these 2 or 3 things, then it doesn’t matter how great they are, they won’t be a fit. Put it on a sticky note in front of you and refer to it often.

Lastly, be prepared to act quickly so you don’t miss out on good candidates. A way to do this is to have email templates ready to go when reaching out to candidates to request an interview day and time. Most email platforms have this feature, just look for “email templates”. Always provide 2 options to eliminate any back-and-forth emails and be clear on the location of the meeting. If you're tech savvy, you can do what I did and create a booking link that I share with candidates so they can pick their own time which sync’s directly with my calendar.

By incorporating these strategies into your resume screening process, you can streamline the evaluation process, identify promising candidates more efficiently, and ultimately make better hiring decisions. Remember, time is precious, and by focusing on the most relevant information and indicators of success, you can save valuable time and energy during the hiring process.
